How Much Does a Garden Cost in Mallorca?
How Much Does a Garden Cost in Mallorca
Understanding what drives your investment and enjoyment
Ask what a garden in Mallorca costs and the answer is, frankly, how long is a piece of string. The size of the plot, the state of the soil, the access to the site and the ambition of the design all play a role. So does the life the client is trying to build.
To understand what really drives the cost of a garden and what it takes to get it right, we asked Mashamba founder Alexander Warren-Gash.
Looking Beyond the Site
"The first thing I do is meet with my clients and visit the site," says Alexander. "You'd be surprised how much you can learn in the first fifteen-minute walk-through."
He's absorbing the practicalities: water sources, site access and where the sun falls throughout the day. But more than anything, he's listening. "I need to understand my clients’ wish list and how they want to live," he explains. "How often will they be here? Are they escaping northern winters? Hosting extended family all summer? Do they love entertaining? Do they want somewhere to wander with a morning coffee?"
For Alexander, the best gardens are never just about planting schemes or beautiful views. They’re about creating the setting for the life his clients imagine for themselves in Mallorca.
He’s looking for clients who see their outdoor space as the heart of the home. A place for long lunches that drift into evening, children disappearing down winding paths and quiet walks at dusk when the rosemary is fragrant from the day’s sun.
Successful projects begin with a client who understand that a great garden is not simply something to admire from the terrace. It is somewhere that draws you outdoors and becomes part of everyday life.

Your Garden Investment
Giving a precise budget before the design phase is nigh on impossible. There are simply too many variables at play. As Alexander puts it, “You can buy an olive tree for €30 or €30,000, or anything in between.” Until the garden has been designed, many of those decisions haven’t yet been made.
But as a point of reference, a Mallorcan countryside garden of 2,500m² and above — designed and built to full specification, including ground preparation, feature planting, labour, project management, four months of aftercare and IVA — typically represents an investment starting from €150,000.
Here is a truth that surprises many clients. Gardens done to a similar specification are likely to cost the same whether they become magical spaces or uninspired developer gardens. Good garden design is unlikely to add significantly to the cost of a project, but it will considerably change how much you enjoy it.
What Drives Garden Costs in Mallorca
While garden size does set a baseline, the final investment is often shaped by factors that are far less obvious.
The Challenge of Access
A large garden requires a remarkable number of deliveries, often significantly more than the house itself. Everything from tiny shrubs to mature olive trees, along with soil, gravel and machinery, must make its way to the site.
If access is restricted by narrow lanes or weight limits, deliveries often need to be made using smaller lorries, increasing both the complexity and cost of the project.
Equally, if the garden is on a terraced hillside, this can limit machine access, making the project more labour intensive.
The Foundation Beneath Your Feet
Few elements transform a garden more quickly than mature planting. The more gnarled and beautiful an Olea europaea (olive) becomes, the greater the investment. Yet Alexander sees mature trees as exceptional value. Compared to a piece of sculpture, they are relatively inexpensive, yet instantly bring structure, character, and a sense of permanence to a garden. Native specimens such as Chamaerops humilis (palmito) have a similar effect, rooting a new landscape in its Mallorcan setting from the outset.
“Never skimp on ground preparation, it’s the foundation of everything that follows.”
Investments for Impact

The more gnarled and beautiful an olive becomes, the greater the investment. Yet Alexander sees mature trees as living works of art and exceptional value. Compared to a piece of sculpture, they are relatively inexpensive and instantly bring structure and impact to a garden.
That same principle applies to native planting. Large specimens such as Chamaerops humilis (palmito) root a new garden in its Mallorcan setting and creating a sense of maturity that would otherwise take years to achieve.
And while the right plants set the scene, it's the flourishes that make the garden yours. These are the most personal line items in any budget. Finishing touches like pathway edging and stepping stones bring polish and intention, while a piece of garden art gives the space personality. A firepit creates a natural place to gather, encouraging evenings outdoors long after the sun has gone down.
Where a Garden Is Truly Made
Good project management keeps the garden project running smoothly, but it’s also where the design comes to life.
Early in his career, Alexander experimented with designing gardens and leaving the installation to others, but he no longer works that way. For him, the design and its implementation are inseparable.
“A Mashamba garden is made during the project management and installation,” he says. “That’s when we bring the design to life.”
With Alexander on site every day, opportunities emerge that no drawing could fully anticipate.
He’ll change the curve of a path because it sits better within the landscape, create a seating area that takes advantage of a newly framed view, or reposition large rocks unearthed during ground preparation, setting them into the landscape so it appears the garden was designed around them.
These moments are not deviations from the plan. They are the design itself, unfolding on site.
“A Mashamba garden is made during the project management and installation, it’s when we bring the design to life.”
A Garden Is for Living In
“Think about the life first, then build the garden around it.”
This is Alexander’s advice to anyone starting a project. Before considering plants or styles, think about the moments you want to create — where you’ll have your morning coffee, where you’ll entertain on a long summer evening, and where you’ll go for a quiet moment to yourself.
A garden designed around those moments is very different from one designed simply to be admired from the house. The most successful gardens aren’t just beautiful, they are beautiful to be in.
