The Mallorcan Countryside Garden
In the heart of Mallorca, an old stone finca looks out over open countryside and a working olive grove. When its owners asked Alexander Warren-Gash to create the garden, the brief was simple. Design it entirely as he envisioned it.
Close to the house, evergreen mounds of native lentiscus line sandstone gravel paths, punctuated by soft stipa grasses and agapanthus blooms. Low stone walls hold the composition together, with erigeron flowering along the path edges.
The palette is cool and calm, with blues, purples and soft whites contrasting against every shade of green. The restraint lets the entirety of the garden read as a single composition.
A wisteria-clad arbour links the house to the pool, casting shade over the walk and framing views of the garden beyond. The pool area is its own retreat. Palms, cycas and agapanthus surround canopied daybeds. The effect is lush, though every plant is suited to Mallorca’s Mediterranean climate.

Each season brings its own moment.
In early spring, echium rises in blue spires along the path. Summer belongs to the meadow, alive with bees and birds, flitting among golden grasses, gaura and perovskia.
In autumn, Virginia creeper turns crimson against silvered lavender and the light gives everything a golden dreamlike quality.
